When We Can't See The Forest For The Trees

Image
When you look at this photo, what do you see? Many will, at first glance, see a tree. More specifically, the single large tree at the forefront of the photo. It's there. It's clear. It's easy to see. However, if you continue to look closely, you'll notice that there's much more. Not only are there other trees a little further back, but a whole hillside sitting along a body of water, smaller branches poking out of the water on the far side, trees in the distance and a beautiful blue sky, reflection in the stillness...there's really so much more! This same limited vision can and does show up in our everyday lives. We get entangled in the fusion and enmeshment of our relationships and can be (very naturally and predictably) blinded to the bigger picture. It can be a difficult thing to zoom out of our lives, shift our lens, consider our circumstances, and observe what bigger process is really taking place in the interactions between ourselves and others. Masks Keep Us Safe

Who of us 18 months ago owned a mask? Who had any reasonable suspicion that masks would now be in every purse, vehicle, or sitting near the front door with our everyday items like keys or wallets? I know I didn't and I know that it has taken about a full year for my family to get used to just grabbing one more automatically as we venture out into the world. They also protect others from things within our being that may not be good for them.  Interestingly we have our physical masks that have become the norm that we cart around to protect ourselves and others, and we also have the invisible, theoretical masks that we all wear. There is a bit of a contrast in that my physical mask I sometimes forget or have to go back for, while this protective mask that I use to cov...

Patient Perseverence

The past year has been difficult in so many ways for so many individuals. Everything was new and different, and not always in a positive way. If you're sitting here and reading this that means that you made it. You survived they year 2020 with all of it's bumps, uncertainties, and new learning! Congratulations!  Perseverance. The definition of the word is "persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success." What does perseverance mean to you? Cammie McGovern once said, "This feeling will pass. The fear is real but the danger is not." Fear is a human emotion. It's normal. It's expected. It's even valid at times. In connection with anxiety there is a function, a purpose, for these emotions that we don't love to feel and experience throughout our lifetime. Fear comes into play when we experience a perceived danger or threat. This causes physiological changes which result in behavioral changes. You may be familiar wi...
